Frequently asked questions

Will you follow the National Curriculum?

The TIC does not replace the National Curriculum, nor attempt to deliver it on behalf of another body, but specialises in providing experiences which would not normally be available to schools, and some opportunities to realise technical ambitions. The TIC assumes schools have delivered the National Curriculum to at least the appropriate level for the relevant age range, but will cater for any ability group in Key Stages 2 and 3. Further access to what the TIC offers can be within the reach of the motivated student at KS4 and post 16. The TIC hopes to enhance, but never replace the school curriculum.

How will young people be assessed?

The TIC does not set out to replicate existing educational or training provision, which is adequately catered for throughout the town, but will provide opportunities to achieve great things in the physical sciences, technology, engineering and enterprise. The TIC will not assume responsibility for delivering existing accredited courses this remains with the student's school, college or training centre. Work produced in the TIC could form part of the coursework for existing courses, but the responsibility for compliance with examination regulations remains with the student and his or her Examination Centre.

The TIC will undertake to deliver the TIC Standard.

Are you a training centre?

No, we are not, but the TIC may deliver some elements of existing competence-based national qualifications, to contribute to the TIC Standard, offered within the TIC or outside it, to give students an overall appreciation of the capabilities of technical processes rather than the detailed operating procedures.

When will the TIC be open?

From 9.00am to 9.00pm during the week, with shorter days at the weekend. A structured programme for schools will be delivered during the nornmal school day. The after-school programme is built around clubs and academies , and attendance is largely voluntary. It is envisaged that the highest level work will take place in these sessions, for all age ranges. The weekend programme will be extended to accommodate the requirements of existing and evolving interest groups, including local model engineering clubs, craft and science groups, and others.

How can I help?

In so many ways, by providing advice, time, skills, encouragement, facilities, materials, answers, funds, resources or expeience. You may have other ways to help, and the first step is to register an interest in helping. We cannot predict the exact needs of our young inventors, but we do know there will be many ways to help.
